Youth mentoring is the process of matching mentors with young people who need or want a caring, responsible adult in their lives. Adult mentors are usually unrelated to the child or teen and work through a community-based social service program.
At Pleasant Valley Youth Ranch we provide meaningful mentoring through a program that offers individual skill development and enhancement, wellness management, and individual psychoeducation.
CCS is a voluntary psychosocial rehabilitation program designed for Wisconsin residents coping with a mental health and/or substance use conditions. Services are available to people of all ages, and the program is person-centered with an individualized approach to planning and services. While CCS services are person and family-centered, services are provided by a team of professionals, peer specialists and supports, all coordinated by a CCS Service Facilitator. CCS programs are designed to be community-based, enhance recovery, and continually build on quality improvement.
Currently, Pleasant Valley Youth Ranch works with Chippewa, Dunn, Eau Claire, and Trempealeau County CCS programs. In general, PVYR focuses on providing services to youth as young as six years old. Getting in touch with your local Department of Human Services and asking about CCS services is the best bet for getting set up with services. Otherwise, referrals can be made by doctors/therapists as well.

After a referral comes in to PVYR, the youth participant will be matched with one of our mentors. Mentors will meet the family with the youth to go over intake forms and plan a weekly schedule for times that the youth will be with the mentor. Mentors are able to transport youth to and from their home or school to the ranch, and back. Together, mentors and youth participants will work on their individualized goal(s) within the community and at Pleasant Valley Youth Ranch.
Mentors and mentees have the choice of spending time in the community doing activities together, such as visiting a local park, museum, learning skills in a social setting, fishing, and so much more! They also have the entire Pleasant Valley Youth Ranch to enjoy together! They learn to interact with goats, chickens, quail, horses and ponies in fun and safe ways. They can cook and bake in the kitchen, learn new games and skills in the clubhouse, and make fun crafts and wood working projects in the craft barn. During warmer seasons, they can play outside and explore outdoor areas. And, there’s a big court for basketball, tennis, pickle-ball, paddleball, even skateboarding… and a barn with ping pong and games. Sometimes, there are even opportunities to take a wagon ride!
Playing a game can be a new experience which helps a person work through the process of a new experience, games can help teach rules and how to play fairly, games can create stress which then allows for an opportunity to practice stress management, games can help a person learn new ways to interact with the environment and coordinate with their bodies, practice eye and hand coordination, learn how to regulate emotions through the process of winning and losing.
